They have given up their nomadic lifestyle and live in permanent structures, although fishing still provides their main income. The contrast with the Moken villages on Surin is stark. The village on Phuket is overcrowded and littered with rubbish and broken bottles, while the villages on Surin, which have very little contact with the Western style throwaway lifestyle, remain clean.
